The Health Careers course at Lyco CTC is designed for 10th – 12th grade students who are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare.  This program places emphasis on clinical health careers, but also provides an overview of administrative careers in healthcare.  The course provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills to be successful in their chosen health career path, and includes instruction in:

  • Medical Terminology and Abbreviations:  The student will learn the language of healthcare, so that he/she is able to communicate with other care providers, to read the patient’s medical record, and to document any observations and/or care given.

  • Human Anatomy and Physiology:  The student will learn the basic structure and function of the the human body, as well as common diseases and disorders that affect each body system.  The student will also learn about human growth and development.

  • Medical Assisting and Nurse Assisting Skills:  The student will learn basic care giving skills, such as:  measuring vital signs, height, and weight, vision screening, CPR and First Aid, assisting with bathing, grooming, and elimination needs, ambulating patients, transferring patients, performing ECGs, medication administration, sterile techniques.
